PNP and NPN sensors wiring

Memo: PNP and NPN wiring difference of proximity sensors

 

You should remember this. Making connection mistakes between PNP and NPN is very common.

The output type will differ depending on the sensor contactor, whether it is NO (normally open) or NC (or normally closed).

PNP sensor is the most common. The load (for instance, a PLC input), is connected between 0 and the output. The power supply is +24V (for instance).
For the NPN sensor, the load is connected between the power supply (+24V) and the output.
