Compressor tutorial

Introduction

Using a VFD to supply a compressor reduces the inrush current when the motor turns on, and enables a three-phase compressor to operate on a 230V single-phase system (provided that the motor can be coupled in 230V three-phase and the power does not exceed 5,5kW).

For this type of assembly, you will need a 2 positions switch for the start and a diaphragm pressure switch to measure air pressure. A suitable switch for this application would be the BPC_R2P_1NO model, available on EASI-Spare. For the diaphragm pressure switch, you can reuse the one on the compressor by using only one contact.

Wiring

Note: When using a three-phase/three-phase VFD, the motor must operate with a star coupling since the voltage is 400V.

Warning: For the first start up, you must verify if the rotation direction is correct. If it is not, we recommend you to take a look at our article “how to reverse a motor rotation direction“.
