How to reverse a motor rotation direction?

You can reverse an electric motor rotation direction. The method to reverse the rotation direction depends on the motor type.

  • For an asynchronous single-phase motor with 1 or 2 capacitors:

For a single-phase motor, you will need to reverse the strips direction in order to reverse the motor rotation direction.

1. Either a reversing contactor to control in 230 or 24 VAC.

If you opt for this option, you will need to add a button to select the motor rotation direction. For instance, the BPC_R3P_2NO model, available at EASI-Spare.

The button enables the power to be controlled without having to manipulate directly the capacitor.

With this method, do not forget to remove the motor strips.

2. Either a box already assembled, such as TEC_INVMM2, available at EASI-Spare

With this method, do no forget to remove the motor strips.

  • For a three-phase motor:

You will need to reverse 2 power supply phases in order to reverse the rotation direction.

Several options are available to reverse the rotation direction:

1. A reversing contactor to reverse the motor phases and, therefore, reverse the motor rotation direction. You must choose the coils control voltage and buy buttons separately to create the command circuit.

2. Rotary switches to select the motor rotation direction, such as PE20A-WU3 or CS20A-WU3 (careful, this one is sold without a handle).

3. A variable frequency drive:

With a VFD, you can reverse a motor rotation direction via an external command.

  • For MZD type motors:

MZD motors are single-phase.

To reverse the rotation direction, you have two options:

1. With the VFD and without a capacitor:

2. Without a VFD: you must use the capacitor
